People of African descent light the final green candle as they celebrate Imani for the seventh and last day of Kwanzaa, on this first day of the year.

Imani meaning faith, is one of he seventh principles of Kwanzaa — an annual, seven-day pan-African holiday to celebrate African heritage, unity and culture. Kwanzaa’s modern origins in the Black Freedom Movement commits it to the achievement of liberation and social justice.

The 2021–2022 season was celebration of Kwanzaa on its 55th anniversary. Kwanzaa has become a popular holiday among people of African descent throughout the world, especially African Americans in the United States.

Seven Principles of Kwanzaa, also called the Nguzo Saba, are founded upon the belief that environmental justice and social justice are inseparably linked in the moral imperative to achieve and ensure African and human good and the well-being of the world.
