UNGA77: African Union Calls for Reform of the UN Security Council
AU Charperson Macky Sall says its time for the United Nations to overcome marginalization of Africa in decision making
At the UNGA77 meeting, the Senegalese President and Chairperson of the African Union, Macky Sall, lambasted the United Nations over the marginalization of Africa in the most powerful global decision-making body the UN Security Council. He has also urged the Security council to also address conflicts in Africa in the same way it addresses conflicts in other continents.
“It’s time to overcome the reluctance and deconstruct the narratives that persist in confining Africa to the margins of decision-making circles. It is time to uphold the just and legitimate African demand for the reform of the Security Council”, said President Sall at the ongoing United Nation 77th General Assembly meeting in New York, United States.
UN Security Council has five permanent members and 10 non-permanent members, while according to published statistics 70% to 75% of all the issues discussed in the governmental body revolve around Africa.
Sierra Leone’s foreign minister, David J. Francis, who is also the Chair of the African Union Committee to lead talks on reforming the UN Security Council has since called the exclusion of Africa from the council “historical injustice.”
During his address at the UNGA, President Macky Sall reiterated his call for a better representation of Africa on the world stage saying, “I would like to remind you of our request for the African Union to be granted a seat within the G20, so that Africa can, at last, be represented where decisions are taken that affect 1.4 billion Africans”.
“If an African country was to get a seat at the G20, which one should it be and why”, he added.
The Chairperson of the African Union also called for the lifting of sanctions against Zimbabwe in his address to world leaders.
