Shampoos from the OGX line of Johnson&Johnson products found unfit for use.

We have always known that the cosmetics and hygience industry is notorius for its contributions to pollution of the human environment and also body. Johnson & Johnson, one of the biggest global manufacturer and distributer was sued in the state of Illinois, USA., after a toxic chemical combination was found in the OGX line of shampoo and conditioner hair care products.

If you are not aware, these are some of the OGX shampoos that Johnson & Johnson is being sued over. They have a chemical called DMDM hydantoin, which is a base component and preservative. The effects of this toxin range from cancer, scalp irritation and hair loss. If these products are able to do this to human body, one can only wonder their effect on water bodies and the environment.

OGX Beauty was founded in 2006 by Todd Christopher — , one of Forbe’s highschool dropouts who woke up a billionaire after selling the his OGX beauty company in 2016 to Johnson & Johnson for $3.3 Billion.

OGX is a United States brand, and its products are manufactured and distributed globally to retailers in over 40 countries. These include Ukraine, Argentina, Egypt, Spain, Mexico,Brazil, Peru, Equador, Colombia, Italy, Iran, Singapore, Malaysia, India, Belrus, Norway, UK & Ireland, Chile, Poland, Turkey, Russia, Armenia, Kazakstan,Azerbaijan, Greece, Arabia, Puerto Rico, Portugal, Korea, Thailand, Vietnam, Philippines, Indonesia, France, Germany, Netherlands, South Africa, Ghana, Australia and New Zealand.

Though the product’s marketing seems to be focused on people with straight hair, or 1 and 2 hair types, some of the products are also popular among Black women and women with color endowed with the 3 and 4 hair types. These are the shampoos — ‘argan oil of morocco’, brazilian keratin smooth’ and ‘coconut milk’. The ‘biotin collagen’ shampoo is popular among middle aged women. All these shampoos are on the list.

As the beauty industry expands, are there more sustainable ingredients that can be used to manufacture products that are healthy for use to people and their environment? Will it be possible to attain enough ingredients needed to manufacture cosmetic products that deliver on their promise to enhance health also biodegradable ?
